For over ten years, artist JR has chosen public spaces to showcase his monumental photographic collages and creative urban interventions with the French creative’s works appearing on walls in cities around the world. This spring, JR was invited by the Musée du Louvre to transform one of the most recognisable aspects of the world-renowned museum into a monumental optical illusion that literally made the iconic Louvre pyramid disappear.

The iconic I.M. Pei-designed pyramid has been made into a surprising anamorphic image, as paper sheets cover the entirety of the landmark’s tiled glass façade. Printed on the paper is a huge-scale black and white image of the Louvre’s historic palace building — when viewed from a certain vantage point, the collage perfectly aligns to the architectural backdrop and completely conceals the glass pyramid from view.
