21 year old Phillip Phillips has beaten Filipina-Mexican Jessica Sanchez to be crowned the winner of American Idol 2012 amid a record breaking 132 million votes cast. In its eleventh season, Idol shows that despite X Factor and Simon Cowell’s jumping ship, the multi-million dollar franchise is still top of the pops.

The much expected duets saw Sanchez sing “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” with Tony and Grammy winner Jennifer Holliday whilst winner Phillips was joined by perform with Creedence Clearwater Revival lead singer’s John Fogerty on “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” followed by “Bad Moon Rising.”

Judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez both took to the stage to sing “Walk This Way” and “Follow the Leader” respectively, but it was Rihanna who stole the show. The sexy singer’s ever elaborate performance included her coming out of giant box delivered like a gift to the Idol stage where she then gave a sterling performance of “Where Have You Been.”

Away from the music, former contestant Ace Young proposed on live television to girlfriend Diana DeGarmo, who was the runner up on Season 3. Both have pursued a career on Broadway after their stints on Idol and luckily for Young, DeGarmo accepted.
