English artist Damien Hirst, has unveiled two new sculptures and thank god they are a million miles away from those awful skulls! The recent pieces, ‘Legend’ and ‘Myth’, are currently on display at Chatsworth House as part of Sotheby’s Beyond Limits until October 30. The sculptures depict a winged horse and unicorn that have been flayed down their middle to expose the visceral musculature and bones beneath.

Standing on individual platforms, the mythical creatures face away from one another to reveal their insides in opposite directions. The fantasy aspect of the animals is visually debunked by putting on display their and anatomy and inner workings. Hirst said of his recent works,“In a way, science brings religion down to earth and to cut open mythical creatures and expose them as no different to mortal horses is somehow still magical. it’s kind of like exploding a myth to make it real.”

Sotheby’s Beyond Limits is now firmly established as one of the leading events in the artistic calendar.Works by more than 20 leading artists from around the world, including René Magritte, Nadim Karam, Takashi Murakami, William Turnbull, Marc Quinn, Ju Ming, Jaume Plensa and Barry Flanagan, will be on display with many showing in the UK for the first time.
